A primary school in Stockport has been forced to shut for a week due to a large number of children and staff being instructed to self-isolate.
Westmorland Primary School in Brinnington has announced it will be closed from today (July 12) until next Monday (July 19) due to a ‘number of staff having to self-isolate’.
The school said teachers will continue to set and mark work while pupils study at home.
Martin Henderson, headteacher at Westmorland Primary School, said: “Following a rise in cases of Covid among staff and pupils, there has been an increase in the numbers of childen and staff needing to self-isolate due to bubble closures following a positive PCR test.
“Due to the number of staff having to self-isolate, we have had to make the difficult decision to close the school to all pupils until July 19.
“The teaching team will continue to set and mark work for pupils each day online and will offer telephone support and help to children who are currently isolating following their bubbles closing.
“Families will be contacted to confirm arrangements regarding necessary isolation periods for each child.”
According to its website, the school is expected to break up for the summer holidays on July 28.
The school closure follows a rise in coronavirus cases across Greater Manchester in the week ending July 7.
Eight boroughs in the city-region have seen infection rates going up, according to the latest data from Public Health England (PHE).
The infection rate in Greater Manchester as a whole is now at 485.0 cases per 100,000 population, well above the England average of 317.2 cases per 100,000 people.
Stockport had seen an 18 pc increase in positive cases compared to the previous week - leaving the infection rate at 381.4 cases per 100,000 population.
