A body has been found after a woman went to a police station in Greater Manchester and claimed she had killed a man and buried his body in a garden.

On Tuesday, officers began to dig up a garden in Reddish, Stockport and later said human remains had been found and were believed to be those of a man.

The woman went to Cheadle Heath police station on Sunday, Greater Manchester police (GMP) said.

The man is yet be formally identified and a Home Office postmortem was scheduled for Wednesday. The family of the man allegedly killed had been informed, police said.

A 63-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remained in custody for questioning.

DI Dan Clegg from GMP’s major incident team said: “The investigation is still in its early stages and many questions still need answers. We will continue our work at the scene through the night and hope in the coming days we can piece together the exact circumstances surrounding the man’s death.”

Anyone with information is encouraged to contact police on 101 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
