Stockport County condemn fans who invaded the pitch and confronted rival players during Edgeley Park semi-final

Stockport County say they are "embarrassed" by the actions of two fans who invaded the pitch and started a confrontation with rival players during yesterday's big Edgeley Park clash.

County took on AFC Fylde in front of a bumper 6,000 plus crowd in the second leg of their FA trophy clash with a place in the Wembley final up for grabs.

However after Fylde's Alex Reid struck a last minute winner to make it 3-2 and deny the Hatters two supporters invaded the pitch to angrily confront them.

Footage shot from the stands shows one man in a blue coat can be seen running onto the pitch from the Cheadle End and charging towards the celebrating players, then raising his arms.

He is pushed away by several Fylde players before several Stockport players and a steward intervene and manage to push him back into the stand.

The footage, uploaded to the Match Days YouTube channel, also shows st the same time a second fan running onto the pitch and angrily confronting other players for Fylde, who play in the National League, one division above Stockport.

It's understood they were not arrested on the day but the club are now trying to help police identify them.

In a strongly worded statement the club said they were "embarrassed" by their actions and promised they would be handed life bans from the ground once their identities were known.

A spokesman said: "We are embarrassed by the behaviour of the individuals who ran onto the pitch despite the repeated warnings we have issued advising people not to enter the field of play.

"We have been analysing CCTV and other footage in order to identify the two main offenders and we are continuing to liaise with Greater Manchester Police, as this is a criminal matter.

"We are also seeking to impose lifetime bans from Edgeley Park on these individuals."

But less than a minute later Reid struck to send the team based near Blackpool and to Wembley.

The Fylde manager, former Tranmere and Bury player Dave Challinor, said afterwards he believed the incident had been inspired by the Birmingham City fan who ran onto the pitch and punched Aston Villa's Jack Grealish.

Paul Mitchell was jailed for 14 weeks for assault and pitch encroachment after attacking young Villa star Grealish in the Second City derby last month.

The Fylde boss said he felt the incident was inspired by Birmingham fan Paul Mitchell's attack on Jack Grealish (PA)

Challinor told The Sun after the game: “It just shows how big an effect football all over this country has.

“You have one idiot who runs on at Birmingham and all of a sudden now everyone thinks it’s clever to do it.

“It’s wrong, it really is. What you can’t do is say that’s synonymous of all their fans, it’s not it’s just some idiot running on the pitch.

“It’s dangerous, really dangerous, but people just need to self-police. If someone wants to go on the pitch no matter how many police or stewards you have you aren’t going to stop them.

“But we don’t want to go back to where it was 15 or 20 years ago in this country where people are behind fences.”
