Stock up, stock down after Week 2 of Colts training camp

The Indianapolis Colts officially wrap up the second week of training camp Sunday afternoon when they take the field for practice at the Grand Park Sports Complex in Westfield.

Though there is still a long way to go during training camp and the preseason, there have been some storylines and position battles to keep up with during the first half of training camp.

Some players have helped their stock—whether it be for a starting role or a roster spot—while others have struggled to keep up to begin training camp:

Stock Up: LB Anthony Walker

Some might find it hard to believe a 15-game starter from the 2018 season can raise his stock at the beginning of training camp but given the hype surrounding third-round pick Bobby Okereke and his potential to steal a starting role from Walker, there was a bit of dip in the stock of the Northwestern product.

However, the third-year linebacker has started off training camp almost perfectly. He’s running exclusively with the first-team defense and appears to have solidified himself as the running mate to Darius Leonard at the MIKE position to begin training camp. Through the two weeks, it’s Walker’s job to lose.

Stock Down: LB Matthew Adams

This isn’t to say that Adams is in any danger of losing a roster spot but after he started the first week of training camp working as the starting SAM linebacker, Adams has given way to rookie sixth-round pick E.J. Speed, who has been used all over the defense.

Adams is athletic and thrived in the SAM role during the home stretch of the regular season. It makes sense that the Colts want to see some other players work in with the first-team defense, but Adams appears to have lost at least a few reps with the unit.

It will be interesting to see how the next two weeks go in the linebacker corps, but Adams certainly will be fighting to get those first-team reps back.

Stock Up: C Josh Andrews

The Colts know who their starting center is to anchor the offensive line. That would be Ryan Kelly. But they also know there is a big role to be had in the depth behind him as the backup. Two players have been vying for that role—Andrews and Evan Boehm.

While Boehm was the immediate backup during the 2018 season, Andrews has been working as the primary backup to Kelly during the first two weeks of training camp. With how much Kelly has missed due to injury over the past two seasons, that is a valuable role.

Stock Down: S Matthias Farley

Though he has proven to be a valuable and reliable rotational piece in the secondary, Farley seems to be buried in the safety depth chart behind Malik Hooker, Clayton Geathers, Khari Willis and George Odum. It’s a crowded room with only limited spots, but Farley doesn’t appear to be making as much noise as the rest of the group.

Farley’s 2018 season ended early following the Week 5 game against the New England Patriots. He was a fixture in the secondary at that point, but he could be in jeopardy of losing his roster spot if the rest of the room continues to progress.

Stock Up: CB Quincy Wilson

We know this is a huge year for Wilson as the Florida product enters his third season. He showed fruits of development during the second half of the regular season in 2018, and it appears he’s picking up right where he left off to begin training camp.

Wilson, who has been working all over the secondary, has been primarily running with the first-team defense when they are in nickel and dime packages. He has some stiff competition in rookie Rock Ya-Sin—whose having a strong camp himself—but he’s answered the call thus far.

Stock Down: C/G Evan Boehm

As the aforementioned Josh Andrews works as the primary backup to starting center Ryan Kelly, this has left Boehm to see his stock fall a little bit. Given his positional flexibility to work all over the interior, Boehm’s roster spot is still likely safe.

However, he will need a strong preseason to show that he deserves a spot among the centers and guards. He will also be looking to battle with Andrews for the backup center role, which was his primary job during the 2018 season. Through two weeks of training camp, though, his stock has slipped a little bit.

Stock Up: DT Grover Stewart

A fourth-round pick in 2017, Stewart has taken some time to develop as he enters his third season. Coming from a Division II school is never an easy transition and while he might have been a better fit for the odd front under former head coach Chuck Pagano, Stewart has re-made himself to fit the aggressive scheme under Matt Eberflus.

Stewart is sporting a leaner build to go along with his power and explosion off the line. This has allowed him to ake a huge impact on the interior and could help him carve out a significant role on early downs. The arrow is pointing up for the Albany State product.
