5 Steelers who improved their stock in Week 3 of the preseason

(AP Photo/Mark Zaleski)

On Sunday night, the Pittsburgh Steelers dominated the Tennessee Titans in all phases. The final score was 18-6, but it wasn’t that close. The Steelers now have to turn around and play their final preseason game in four days, meaning this was the last meaningful shot for many of these players to make an impression on the coaching staff.

Here are the five guys who really improved their stock this week:

QB Mason Rudolph

Rudolph put together another strong performance. He went 6-for-9 passing for 75 yards and a pretty touchdown pass to wide receiver James Washington. His accuracy and decision making keep improving, and his grasp of the offense gets better every week.

With Ola Adeniyi, Bud Dupree and Anthony Chickillo out, Skipper stepped up. The rookie out of Toledo racked up four tackles and a sack. If Adeniyi isn’t ready to go when the season starts, Skipper could land a spot on the 53-man roster.

Kelly has been an excellent story. After coming into the league in 2018, Kelly had a brief stint in the Alliance of American Football and found his way to Pittsburgh after that league folded. And once again Kelly has impressed. He’s been getting solid practice reps all throughout training camp and has established himself as the team’s third safety. When Sean Davis left the game Sunday with an ankle injury, Kelly came in and was solid, finishing with four tackles.

Wide receiver is a heavily contested positional unit, and the Steelers coaches are going to have a hard time narrowing this list to just six. But one guy who continues to play well and is creeping closer to securing a spot is Spencer. His speed and quickness really pop, and his abilities as a receiver and a return man give him an edge over some of the other young guys on the roster.

DT Dan McCullers

I have to admit I’m a little shocked to include McCullers on this list. But you cannot deny McCullers looks more fit and stronger this preseason than any other time in his career. On Sunday night, he had four tackles in limited action and got a great push on every snap. The defensive line is already a strength of this team, and an improved McCullers can only make it better.
