The most successful investors in the stock market have great discipline. That's why they can materially outperform in a bull market with a portfolio of top-rated growth stocks.
They used time-tested rules to make strategic buys, and other key rules used to protect gains or cut losses short. Top-notch growth investors are also very good about maintaining an up-to-date watchlist.
Creating one is easy to do using the Stock Lists tab at the top of the homepage of Investors.com. After that, click "My Stock Lists."
Click "New" to start a new stock list. The first step is to name your list, then add symbols you want to monitor, separated by a space.
Each list can hold up to 50 symbols and you can build up to five lists. Click any data column header to sort your list. Each stock list is available in a Fundamental View, SmartSelect View and a Price & Volume View.
The fundamental view shows recent quarterly earnings data. With the SmartSelect view, you can sort by Composite Rating or any other IBD rating. The price and volume view allows you to sort by volume percent change, so you can see which names on your list are rising or falling sharply on any given day. Sort by price percent change to see who the day's biggest movers are.
Target The Stock Market Winners
To delete or move a stock to another list, check the box next to your selected stocks and hover over the "Choose" link below the list to display your options. (The accompanying image is a sample watchlist of the Magnificent Seven stocks using the Price & Volume view.)
When it comes to building a watchlist, it makes sense to have a watchlist of stocks that are taking a breather after bullish gains. Big stock market leaders often present alternate, or add-on entries after breakouts. Some may start trading tightly near highs after a breakout, others might pull back to their 21-day exponential moving averages and find support. If a market pullback intensifies, some leaders might come down to their 10-week lines and bounce.
Identify a buy point and set a price alert with MarketSurge. Leaderboard subscribers can set price alerts for stocks in electronic versions of the IBD 50, Sector Leaders and Stock Spotlight screens.
Meanwhile, you can find stocks building bases frequently in Stocks on the Move on the homepage of investors.com. It's a continuously updated list of heavy-volume gainers and is another good way to populate a watchlist. An initial appearance for a stock in this screen can often presage future appearances as institutional investors build a position in a stock.
