Stirling takes centre stage for Hogmanay celebrations

The eyes of Scotland were on Stirling as a spectacular fireworks display over the Wallace Monument helped bring in 2022.

The display was broadcast live on BBC Scotland’s main Hogmanay programme, with viewers from all over the country tuning in to see the fireworks from the comfort of their own homes after public events were put on hold for a second year running due to Covid concerns.

A performance from the BBC’s Scottish Symphony Orchestra accompanied the amazing display, with tracks from artists including Hue and Cry, Calvin Harris, Biffy Clyro, Lewis Capaldi and Snow Patrol included in the set list.

It was the main point of what was once again a quieter Ne’erday across the region, with venues quieter than normal as many followed the advice to limit their celebrations in the face of the spread of the Omicron variant.

The display was cast across the globe as part of the BBC's Hogmanay coverage (Stirling Observer)

Last year’s Hogmanay programme on the BBC attracted 1.5 million viewers across the country - with the historic Stirling attraction also lit up to show the way to a New Year many are hoping will be a brighter time.

The Observer’s photographer was out and about on Hogmanay catching some striking snaps from the display - and you can see a collection of what he captured on the night here.
