Stirling sword man breached community work order

A Stirling man has breached an unpaid work order imposed on charges which included the possession of a sword.

George Haney, of Hawthorn Crescent, had received the community payback order for two offences which occurred in June 27, 2020, at an address at Carronshore, Falkirk.

The 24-year-old had admitted behaving in a threatening and abusive manner likely to cause a reasonable person to suffer fear or alarm by repeatedly banging on windows and doors at an address at Reynolds Avenue and shouting and swearing as well as uttering threats of violence. He had also pleaded guilty to having an offensive weapon - a sword - there.

Stirling Sheriff Court heard on Wednesday that Haney admitted breaching the order by failing to attend appointments to carry out unpaid work.

His agent Virgil Crawford told Sheriff Keith O’Mahony that it was not clear from a breach report how many hours were outstanding, adding: “He says over 200 hours. I can’t tell that from this report.”

Mr Crawford asked Sheriff O’Mahony to defer sentence to establish how many hours had been worked.

Sheriff O’Mahony described the breach as strange as Haney, he said, had spent almost a year on the order before the report was submitted.

Mr Crawford pointed out that Haney had been going through a troubled period and started to take Valium.

He had been studying joinery and carpentry at Alloa College. Although there had been problems, the course was back on track and Haney still had a place there.

Sheriff O’Mahony told Haney he wished to defer sentence to establish how many hours of unpaid work Haney had carried out.

Asked if he felt he had benefited from the order, Haney replied ‘yes’.

Sentence was deferred until February 16 for a full criminal justice social work report and Haney was ordered to appear on that date.
