Stirling residents give messages of thanks to popular retiring postman

Riversiders gathered in the Abbey Road Market on Saturday to mark the retirement of their postman, James Kaney.

James has delivered the mail in Riverside for 18 years and has become well known to everyone for his cheery manner and helpful approach.

Several of the well-wishers had their dogs with them - as James was always pleased to see them too.

June Watson thanked him for being such a friend to Riverside, saying: “He has been the most amazing postman, thoughtful, dependable and considerate.”

James responded by saying: “This could only happen in Riverside. The people here are amazing.”

He went on to say that he would love to continue delivering the mail in Riverside - but that his knees won’t let him.

A presentation was made, with James being given several gifts including a cake specially baked by James Taylor, a Riverside lad who has just turned 14.

Fiona Dyet, one of the organisers said: “He will be a hard act to follow. We have been incredibly lucky to have him for 18 years - it won’t be the same without him.”

Local bard Pat Morrissey even went as far as writing a poem in his honour:

Say cheerio tae oor postie, James.

Who brocht a’ the letters and bills tae oor hames,

And leaflets an’ offers, birthday cards,

Guid news, bad news an’ deals on cars,

Cut price pizza, cheap junk mail,

Parcels fae Amazon, hooses for sale.

In dreich cauld sna’, or blisterin’ sun,

Wi’ a cheeky wee smile and a braw sense o’ fun,

He’d chap on the door, aye ready tae blether,

Laughin’ an’ jokin’ whitever the weather.

But noo when yer gate creaks on its hinges

The door bell rings, the dug next door whinges,

It’ss no’ be James - he’s hung up his bag,

No’ James at the corner rollin’ a fag,

He’ll be up some burn poachin’ for troot,

Wish him good luck -we’ll miss him, nae doot!
