Stirling mum's skydive fundraiser to thank city-based charity

A Stirling mum whose son has a rare genetic disorder is to take part in a parachute jump in aid of the charity which has helped the family cope.

Cara Scougall’s son Mylo, who will be two next month, has hypotonia which results in developmental delay.

Mylo cannot walk and his speech is limited. He was diagnosed with hypotonia last August and has been receiving physiotherapy and learning to communicate using the Makaton sign language programme.

The money raised from Cara’s skydive will go to Stirling-based charity PLUS Forth Valley which helps families and children with disabilities.

Cara said this week: “Mylo is unable to walk or crawl, but is now weight bearing with specialist equipment. It affects all aspects of his life, even the simplest of tasks like holding a cup.

“Mylo’s speech is also delayed and he can only say a very few words. He also has difficulty eating solid foods and he is a lot smaller than children of his age.

“When he was four months old, Mylo couldn’t use his arms or lift his head, because of low muscle tone, but with lots of daily physio he is now able to use his arms, hold his head and sit unaided.

“We are now learning Makaton to encourage Mylo to learn words and signs to help him communicate.”

Mylo lives in Braehead with Cara, dad David and six-year-old sister Charley.

They have been receiving help from PLUS Forth Valley, based at Springkerse Industrial Estate.

The charity aims to provide a better quality of life for children and young people with disabilities and additional support needs and their families.

Cara said: “PLUS have been amazing. Finding them has been such a great help. It has been very difficult as a parent to watch your child go through this.

“I had been completely lost in a world I knew nothing about.

“With PLUS I met other parents in a similar situation and had the opportunity to chat and have a cuppa while babies and toddlers play.

“It was exactly what I needed.

“The skydive gives me the opportunity to give back to a great charity which has already helped us so much, and I know will continue to help us in the coming years.”

The jump is scheduled to take place at Strathallan Sky Dive Centre, Auchterarder on May 15 which is also Cara’s birthday.

So far she has raised £615.
