Stirling Albion boss praises comeback but urges defence to tighten up

Stirling Albion manager Darren Young praised his side for recovering from two goals against Elgin City on Saturday but knows they need to cut out the defensive errors.

Second-half goals from Robert Thomson and Aaron Dunsmore earned a 2-2 draw with Gavin Price’s men, who had led 2-0 at the break but let their advantage slip with defender Darryl McHardy also sent off for a second yellow card with 12 minutes remaining.

Reflectiong on the weekend’s draw – which ended the Moray men’s run of four straight wins at Forthbank – Young said: “It was very frustrating because I thought we had all the play before they scored the first goal. It was a very poor one to concede because they just came straight through us.

“It was another mistake that led to the second goal and it was the same at Dumbarton when they probably had three shots on target and scored two goals. This time it might have been two shots on target and two goals.

“We had some harsh words at half-time and got two good goals to get back in the game.

“It was just disappointing that we didn’t manage to get the three points after that but coming from two goals down showed great character and spirit. I thought young Josh Cooper came on and did very well after Dale Carrick had to go off because he had jarred his knee.

“It’s a point on the board and we need to try and get our first three points against Stenhousemuir – they are a big, strong team and we can’t keep giving teams two goals of a start.”

The Binos lost 2-0 at Dumbarton in their cinch League Two opener and need to tighten up at the back when they face Stenhousemuir at Forthbank this weekend.

Albion then have back-to-back away games against an Annan Athletic side who just missed out on promotion last season after losing to FC Edinburgh in the play-off final and early leaders Bonnyrigg Rose, who were Lowland League champions in 2021/22.

Left-back Cammy Clark will miss the visit of the Warriors due to suspension but skipper Ross McGeachie had replaced him against Elgin after Clark’s red card at Dumbarton.

And winger Danny Denholm should be available to face Stephen Swift’s team, who kicked off with a 1-0 home win over Albion Rovers but were beaten 2-1 by Annan at Galabank on Saturday.
