Stillborn baby girl found at recycling plant may have been 'concealed pregnancy'

A baby found dead at a recyling plant last week was stillborn, police have confirmed.

The authorities believe the mother potentially had a 'concealed pregnancy' and did not give birth to the child in a hospital.

NHS bosses are now appealing for the mum to come forward as she may have suffered physical complications during the delivery.

The child was discovered wrapped in a purple towel at a waste centre in Bowling Back Lane, Bradford, on Thursday last week.

The 'distinctive' towel covering the newborn had a map of the Spanish island of Fuerteventura on it and also featured tropical images such as a fish, sea horses and a palm tree.

A West Yorkshire Police spokesman said: "A post mortem examination was carried out last week and it was concluded that the baby was stillborn.

"It is likely that this may have been a concealed pregnancy and the baby was not born in a hospital setting, so the mum of the baby may need urgent medical attention.

"Police and partner agencies are extremely concerned about the mum of the baby and are urging her or any friends or family members to come forward to help us give her the help and support she may need."

Sara Hollins, head of midwifery at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said the mother was likely to have been extremely traumatised by the birth.

She added that the mum may have signs of infection and be suffering from symptoms linked to increased blood loss.

“Police and partner agencies have worked tirelessly for the past week to try and trace mum of the baby," Ms Collins said:

"We are renewing our appeal today to urge mum or her relatives to come forward and speak to us.

"We are incredibly concerned for the welfare of the mum, as the birth of the baby would have been extremely distressing and there may have been physical complications and we want to ensure that you are OK and get access to the help you may need.

“We are also appealing to the public for any information about anyone you thought may be pregnant, or perhaps may have concealed their pregnancy. I would urge you to come forward with any information, which may prove vital to help us with our enquiries."
