Still no opt outs for 49ers heading into training camp

While players around the NFL have started opting out of the 2020 NFL season to mitigate the risks of playing during the COVID-19 pandemic, the 49ers have yet to have a player take the opt out.

The deadline for the opt out is supposed to be a week from the day the deal between the NFL Players Association and NFL owners is signed, but that date keeps getting pushed with no agreement officially reached. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the deadline is expected to be set for Aug. 4 or Aug. 5 — forcing players to make a choice earlier than anticipated.

While the 49ers haven’t had any players opt out, they’ve had two players hit the reserve/COVID-19 list after the initial rounds of testing.

Wide receiver Richie James Jr. was the first 49ers player to hit the reserve list. He was followed by running back Jeff Wilson Jr.

Players on the reserve/COVID-19 list don’t count toward the team’s roster, and they can come off the list once they’re deemed healthy.
