Stiliyan Petrov hails 'complete' Celtic hero Henrik Larsson as he opens up on playing comeback bid

Former Celtic hero Stiliyan Petrov believes Hoops legend Henrik Larsson was streets ahead of Bulgaria team-mate Dimitar Berbatov.

Petrov played with some stellar team-mates at the UEFA Cup finalists of 2003 and a Bulgaria squad featuring former Manchester United striker Berbatov.

But Petrov reckons the maverick pales in comparison to legendary Swedish forward Larsson.

Asked on how it was to play with Berbatov on the Michael Anthony Show, he said: "He's just gifted, he was class to watch, that's something that separates him from some other strikers.

"It was a pleasure to share a dressing room with him as a team-mate. It was good when we played together, I loved it, but when we played against each other I wanted to kick him."

But on which of the two legendary strikers was better, Petrov answered: "Oh, it has to be Henrik Larsson. Of course.

"They're both great players, but if I have to pick one it would be Henrik Larsson.

"He was a complete player. I mean, with Berba you can have a lot of questions about some parts of his game.

"But about Henrik, you don't have any questions about this man."

Petrov was diagnosed with leukemia in March 2012 but five months later he was in remission and, then 34, the midfielder wanted to make history with a dramatic comeback at Aston Villa.

But the size of his task was laid bare when he completed treatment and began training again - only to clock almost an hour doing his first first 5km run.

Manager Roberto Di Matteo eventually elected not to offer him a place in the Premier League squad.

And Petrov said: "That idea came from, 'shall we just do it?' And I started training again, bearing in mind I lost all my muscle, stamina, everything I've won as a player.

"I remember my first 5k run was 58 minutes, and I had to stop 36 times through it. Honestly, it was painful. That was my first jog on the way back to play football.

"At the start you were like, let's see how it goes. I was always competitive, I wanted to drive and I wanted to achieve.

"I went back and I've done a full pre-season. Now, if you're a manager and you look at somebody who's come back from such a disease, with the desire and the drive to go back and play professional football...

"I understand that. It's not about the better players. Obviously he was saying, 'you're not in my plans, we can offer you coaching'. But that wasn't my priority."
