Stewartstown Road crash: Police confirm a man has died

A man has died following a suspected hit and run in West Belfast.

The incident occurred on the Stewartstown Road, close to the Dairy Farm, at around 10.20pm on Friday night.

In a statement issued on Saturday morning, the PSNI confirmed that a “42-year-old male pedestrian has died following a hit-and-run road traffic collision in west Belfast last night (Friday, 5th February)”.

They said that the “man who sadly died was Richard Gerard Boyle who was from Dunmurry”.

The statement added: “The collision on the Stewartstown Road was reported to police just before 10:20pm. It was reported that the male was struck by a vehicle that failed to stop at the scene.

“Police and NIAS responded to the collision, and the man was taken to hospital where he sadly died.”

Inspector Phillip McCullagh said he is appealing to anyone who was on the Stewartstown Road between 9.30pm and 10.20pm and witnessed the collision, or drivers who may have captured it on their dash cam, to get in touch by calling 101 and quoting reference number 1997 of 05/02/21.

The Stewartstown Road was closed for a time as police dealt with the collision, but it has since reopened.
