Stewartry Sirens start Sarah Beaney Cup campaign with victory at Ayr Ladies

Stewartry Sirens began their Sarah Beaney Cup campaign with a win at Ayr Ladies.

The Sirens won Tennent’s National League Division One with a perfect record and look set to carry that form into the cup.

The game kicked off in good conditions for a fast flowing game of rugby. For the first 20 minutes neither side could manage to get on top with both teams working really hard in defence.

The first Sirens try came after a fine kick from Lisa Ritchie finding touch from a penalty. From the resulting line out a strong driving maul edged the Sirens towards the try line and the ball made its way to centre Phaedra Snailham who managed to free her arms out of the tackle to score.

Her second of the day followed shortly after when a trademark mazy run saw her run from nearly half way to score under the posts with Ritchie adding the conversion.

A serious injury to an Ayr second row saw half time called early and a change of pitch so that the player could be treated and the game could restart.

It didn’t take long for the Sirens to stretch their lead when, after a scramble in the corner, Ali Henderson manage to crash over.

Ayr managed to score in a very similar fashion not to long after to take the game to 17-7.

Another well worked Stewartry move saw prop Lauren Nicholson – playing just five months after the birth of her son – score to the delight of her team mates.

With the final whistle nearing a slip in the midfield allowed the Ayr number eight to gallop through to score their second of the day.
