Stewartry Sirens record 48-0 win over local rivals Annan Warriors at Greenlaw

The Sirens blew away local rivals Annan Warriors at Greenlaw on Saturday, with the visitors’ hopes of a first league win against the Stewarty side at the fourth attempt killed off early in the match.

With the pitch soft underfoot and a chilly wind blowing, the game kicked off with both teams showing several changes from their first meeting at the start of the season.

With the Sirens and Warriors trying to gain the upper hand, it was Stewartry who struck first, scoring twice in quick succession to take an early lead.

Annan finally got into the game forcing the opposition back through a combination of some strong carrying from the forwards and after poor discipline from the home team, the Warriors pushed hard but could not break down the strong Sirens defence.

Just before the break, Stewartry managed to break free and score a further two tries and gain their bonus point and also deliver a blow to the Warriors confidence after they had pressed hard for a score.

The second half kicked off with the Warriors determined to try and get back into the game and make headway on the score board, however, they couldn’t gain the momentum and the home team scored twice early on to move into a strong position on the scoreboard.

Undaunted, Annan kept pressing and, following another period where the forwards carried hard aligned with what the referee deemed poor discipline from the home team, gained a foothold in the game, for periods knocking hard at the Stewartry line only to be repelled time after time.

A lapse in concentration from the visitors allowed Stewartry to regain possession and territory going into the final 10 minutes of the game.

Once they were back to 15 following a sin bin the Sirens scored their seventh try which was soon followed by their eighth and final score to end the game.
