Stewartry RFC host Rucks n Mauls rugby camp for delighted kids

The Blacks got a taste of what life is like as rugby world champion last week.

Stewartry RFC hosted a Rucks n Mauls kids camp at Greenlaw based on training the All Blacks way.

Thirty seven rugby loving youngsters from primary one through to under-14s took part.

They were able to work on a wide range of skills and were also taught how to perform the famous New Zealand Haka, a pre-match challenge to opponents.

Stewartry RFC development officer, John Muir, said: “It is branded as the southern hemisphere rugby experience. Retired teachers and rugby coaches from New Zealand fly over to the UK for the summer holidays and run camps up and down the country.

“There are only two in Scotland, one in Annan and one at Stewartry, and we’ve been holding them for the last six years. The coaches are hosted by families at the camp and immerse themselves in the local culture.

“It covers everything from running and catching to contact, handling, kicking and speed and agility – all the fundamentals of rugby.

“The feedback has been excellent. Some of the kids wanted to come back for another week!

“It was the equivalent of half a season’s worth of training condensed into one week.”
