Stewartry primary pupil discovered sending sexual images of herself to another person on her phone

A Stewartry primary pupil has been sending sexual images of herself to another person on her phone.

The girl’s parents reported the matter to police after discovering a number of pictures had been sent in the past seven days.

An investigation is now under way and cops are encouraging parents to be on their guard.

Sergeant Collin Scott said: “It is quite worrying that a girl of primary school age is sending sexual images to another person.

“We are appealing to parents to be aware of what children are doing on their phones and if you come across something like this contact your local community officer. If people don’t want to come to us, there are websites they can look at such as Childnet and Thinkuknow, which are very good websites for information.”

Sergeant Scott added: “An unfortunate thing we are finding is more and more young children are online and being exposed to this as they are not mature enough to know what they are doing.

“This is only one incident but there are more that have been reported.

“One of the things we are trying to do is going into the schools. We go into primary schools to tell them about safety and we go into secondary schools to warn them about the dangers of sexting. One of the main difficulties is trying to get the message across to parents as they don’t really
understand – they should take an interest in what their children are doing.

“If a parent wants to speak to a member of our community safety team we are more than happy to do that.”
