Stewartry mum completes 110 mile virtual triathlon for charity close to her heart

A mum of three has completed a 110 mile challenge for a charity close to her heart.

Jenny Wilson took on a virtual triathlon, which involved 44 miles of running and cycling and 22 miles of swimming over 20 days.

And after reaching the finish line on Friday, she is hoping to raise hundreds of pounds for The Butterfly AVM Charity.

Ten years ago, Jenny’s husband Andrew suffered a stroke as a brain arteriovenous malformation (AVM) had burst, leading to major bleeding on the brain.

He was just 30 at the time and years of treatment and operations followed to repair a hole in his brain, but he has come through it all with minimal long-term damage.

And it is only now, a decade on, that the Wilsons – who live near Laurieston – realise just how bad things could have been.

Jenny, who is 36, said: “It was only when I was researching AVM charities and looking into it that you start to realise what had happened.

“It was 10 years ago but there were five years of operations and treatment and I think you need that distance. It wasn’t something we had looked into and when you do, you think ‘Oh my god’.

“A stroke can affect anyone at any age. We lived in Castle Douglas at the time it happened and I phoned the ambulance, who were there in two and a half minutes.

“It was only early medical intervention and we often talk about how different it would have been if it happened where we live now.”

Jenny has so far raised more than £700 for the charity and donations can be made online at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/jennifer-wilson-jennifer-wilson.

She added: “I finished on Friday, I had originally planned to do it in four weeks but had to do it in 20 days as the pool I was using was closing and I hadn’t thought about finding another one.

“It was challenging as I perhaps wasn’t as fit as I was when I started and I had a lot going on at the time.

“It needed a lot of mental strength to keep going at nights and when it was cold or wet but when you’re raising money for charity you’re able to keep going.”
