Stewartry Food Train volunteer plea withdrawn within 20 minutes after being swamped with offers

A Castle Douglas shopping service appeal on social media had to be withdrawn after 20 minutes.

Stewartry Food Train posted a call for volunteers on Facebook early on Tuesday morning.

But the charity was soon swamped with offers of help with supermarket runs for the elderly.

And the constant stream of phone calls forced co-ordinator Isobel Henklemann to delete the plea.

Isobel told the news: “I put the post up on the Dumfries and Galloway Food Train Facebook page at 8.55am.

“I had to take it down an 9.15 because we had enough volunteers – and the phone was still ringing!

“We must have had around 15 enquiries from people wanting to help. Six of them are going to give us their time.”

The Food Train service gets shopping in for more than 100 over-65s in and around Castle Douglas.

The renewed lockdown has seen demand increase as more people steer clear of crowded spaces.

“We have a few more customers needing shopping,” Isobel said.

“Our figures have crept up slightly in recent days.

“We also had a few more volunteers who had to step back because of their age and the Covid situation.

“But we are not overwhelmed as yet.

“Generally people don’t seem to be so worried this time around.”

Isobel paid tribute to all the kind-hearted residents who offered their services.

She said: “I think the people in Castle Douglas are absolutely wonderful.

“This crisis has really brought the best out in people.

“Whenever we ask we have no shortage of volunteers. They are all just great.”
