Stewartry couple George and Helen Hyslop celebrate diamond wedding anniversary

Diamonds, as the adage notes, are forever and that has proven to be the case for one couple.

George “Austin” Hyslop and wife Helen (nee Prentice) celebrated six decades of marriage in style on Wednesday.

The pair, who are both from farming families, met through Young Farmers.

They tied the knot at Balmaghie Parish Church in 1959, where Helen’s sister Marie Kennedy acted as bridesmaid and the late Alan Clark, of Valleyfield, was best man.

George and Helen held their wedding reception at the Cally Palace Hotel in Gatehouse of Fleet.

Later, they added to their family with the arrival of son Ewan, now 59, and 56-year-old daughter Aileen.

The couple stayed at the family’s West Logan farm near Castle Douglas until moving into Barlochan House Care Home in Palnackie recently.

They marked their diamond wedding celebration with a visit from Lord-Lieutenant of The Stewartry, Patsy Gilroy, who delivered a message of congratulations from the Queen.

The happy duo then enjoyed a small celebration with family and friends, including grandchildren Helen, Matthew and George.
