Stewartry church minister's special online services attract hundreds of viewers during coronavirus pandemic

Hundreds of people have been enjoying special church services put together by a Stewartry minister.

Rev David Bartholomew was keen to continue offering hope and encouragement in these uncertain times after the coronavirus forced the closure of all churches.

As a parish minister of the Glenkens, he felt it was important to engage with everyone in the parishes, not just those who go to church.

So he produced an email with worship resources and made a paper copy for those without internet access - then decided to make the videos so there was something a bit more visual.

Rev Bartholomew said: “My computer skills are very basic, but I’m blessed with a wife, Heidi, who has a natural gift in that area and who is also artistic.

“We hit on the idea of providing YouTube services each week; but rather than boring shots of me talking to the camera, we thought this was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate also the beauties of the wonderful countryside on our doorstep.

“I provide the reflections and prayers and choose the songs and hymns and she puts it all together as a visual and musical experience which draws people in.

“We began with a reflection on Psalm 46 and since then we have been on a journey through the events of the Easter story.

“It’s clear from the responses that we have received that it touches people’s hearts and is an inspiration to them in these difficult days. With a few exceptions, all the photos that we include were taken in the Glenkens and quite a few people have shared their own ones which we have been delighted to include.”

The Bartholomews were delighted to find that the videos have already been watched by hundreds of people.

They can be found by searching YouTube for Balmaclellan. Anyone who has difficulty doing this can e-mail Rev Bartholomew on DBartholomew@churchofscotland.org.uk and he will give them a direct link to the videos.
