Stewartry actor Sam Heughan pays tribute to the Bard with Burns Night celebrations

Stewartry actor Sam Heughan helped kick off Burns Night celebrations on Monday.

The Outlander star appeared in a special Scottish Government video aimed at bringing people together even though the pandemic is keeping them apart.

Sam – originally from Balmaclellan – called on friends and fellow Scots “by birth, by ancestry or by inclination” to raise a toast to Scotland’s Bard.

He said: “Tae the man who shared so many words that connect folks from every corner of the world.

“Tae the works that have inspired musicians, writers, artists and actors.”

Then, raising a glass of his own Sassenach whisky, he recited some Burns from To a Louse, saying: “Oh wad some power, the giftie gie us, to see oursels as others see us!”

It’s not the first time Sam has paid tribute to Burns.

YouTube clips of him reciting lines from Ae Fond Kiss and A Red, Red Rose have been viewed tens of thousands of times.
