Stewart Robertson warns Celtic fans that Rangers won’t allow mass Ibrox invasion any time soon

Stewart Robertson has warned Celtic fans won't be allowed back to Ibrox in numbers any time soon.

The Rangers managing director insists the "vast majority" of his club's supporters don't want a return to the days where their great rivals were handed around 7000 tickets for derby clashes.

Celtic fans were traditionally handed the full Broomloan Stand before a decision was taken to cut their allocation to just 800, leading the Parkhead club to respond in kind.

Robertson insists the fact home fans have now been sold season tickets in the old away section creates a "challenge" in reverting to the original arrangement.

Speaking on The Athletic Football Podcast, it was put to Robertson that he "would want your stadium to crackle" on derby days.

But he replied: "I understand the point you're making. I think things have probably evolved over time.

"It's about 800 fans from either side now to go, I don't think there will be in a few weeks’ time – the way Covid was at the time, we had a red zone and there was no away fans in.

"The challenge with actually changing that at the moment is both teams will have sold season tickets in those areas.

"How do you change that back? Those supporters have renewal rights.

"You have a challenge there in changing that.

"It's not something I see changing in the short term, I certainly don't see it changing in the short term."

With Covid-19 red zones still being enforced earlier this season away fans were permitted into Ibrox for the first meeting between the teams in September.

Rangers withdrew an offer of 700 tickets after Celtic were unable to provide assurances this would be reciprocated when the teams met again across the city.

It means there will be no visiting supporters for the midweek Premiership showdown on February 2.

But Robertson maintained most Rangers fans are happy to keep rival attendances at a lower number.

He said: "The vast majority don't (want it to change). They're comfortable with it.

"I don't about the other side of the city, but from our supporters' perspective, they're quite comfortable with it.

"So, the vast majority – I'd be lying if I said everybody."
