Stewart Regan wades into SPFL playoff row as former SFA chief makes 'sporting merit' call

Former SFA chief Stewart Regan has called on the Scottish football authorities to green light the pyramid play-offs - in the name of sporting integrity.

Regan believes the arguments over “sporting merit” at the top of the game which have arisen from the doomed Euro Super League saga apply also to the bottom of the Scottish league.

A decision on whether the tie between the bottom side in League 2 - Club 42 - and the winners of the Highland League v Lowland League play-off has yet to be taken.

That’s despite Brora Rangers and Kelty Hearts being due to face each other in the preliminary play-off this Saturday.

SPFL chiefs are seeking legal opinion on whether the Highland and Lowland leagues were acting within the rules when they declared their champions with Brora having completed just three matches and Kelty 13 before the covid crisis curtailed their campaigns.

But Regan - at the helm when the SFA introduced the pyramid system which opens up entry to the SPFL for tier five clubs - Tweeted: “While we are on the subject of sporting merit, I sincerely hope that Kelty Hearts and Brora Rangers get the chance to contest the play-offs and a chance to play ‘Club 42’ Brechin City.

“This is why we created the pyramid in 2015.”

Record Sport revealed yesterday how Brechin, who look certain to finish bottom of League 2 for a second season running, have written to the SPFL board asking for relegation to be scrapped for a second season.

Instead they want Brora and Kelty promoted into a beefed-up bottom tier.

It comes after Brechin were saved from relegation by the decision to scrap the play-offs in 2020 amid the covid crisis - a move which denied the same two clubs, Brora and Kelty, their chance at winning promotion to the SPFL.

A decision on whether the play-offs are to go ahead is expected later this week.
