Stewart Milne claims Celtic chief executive Peter Lawwell has too much power in Scottish football

Departed Aberdeen chairman Stewart Milne has suggested Peter Lawwell has too strong an influence over the Scottish game.

The construction magnate recently stepped down from his position after more than two decades at the sharp end, handing responsibilities to Atlanta based businessman Dave Cormack .

He has worked in and around the vicinity of the Celtic executive for over 15 years and while he feels Lawwell has the best interests of Celtic at heart and praised his intelligence, he also suggested that there are times when his power is too great.

Lawwell previously held seats on both the SPFL and SFA board and held significant sway in the running of the game.

Speaking to the BBC, Milne said: "I think it would be fair to say that Peter is a strong character.

"He's in a powerful position. He's a wise, intelligent guy.

"He knows how to look after the interests of his club.

"I wouldn't go as far as saying that he runs Scottish football but Peter does bear a considerable influence.

When pressed on the level of Lawwell's influence and if he wields too much power for one man, Milne was frank.

"At times possibly yeah," he admitted. "And I'll be seeing Peter on Saturday and I'll remind him that you told me to tell him that."
