Stewart Donald moves to assure fans over Sunderland's transfer plans

Sunderland owner Stewart Donald has moved to reassure fans any potential takeover will not hold up this summer's transfer activity at the club.

US businessman Mark Campbell is believed to be in talks with Donald over buying a controlling share in the Black Cats.

Donald has been open with fans over the need for external investment in the club going forward, be that in the shape of a takeover or more investors joining the current board.

With Sunderland narrowly missing out on promotion back to the Championship via the play-offs last month, many fans are looking to the club to invest again in the transfer market this summer.

And while manager Jack Ross will be looking to add quality over quantity in this window, some supporters had expressed concerns that a potential change of ownership in the boardroom could hold up activity in the market.

However, Donald has taken to social media to assure fans that won't be the case.

Responding to a supporter on Twitter, Donald tweeted: "Potential investment is moving along albeit either way we are able to move club forward at the present time.

"It will not stop any signings from progressing and we are working on targets. I am sure there will be news soon on players we know we need to keep improving the squad."

Sunderland today revealed their retained list, with Adam Matthews and Max Stryjek the key names to be released by the club.

Reece James and Elliot Embleton are currently in talks over extending their stay on Wearside, while Luke Molyneux and Robbin Ruiter's exits were confirmed.
