Steward removed for doing the 'ayatollah' next to Swansea City fans during Cardiff derby match

A steward was removed from his position at the South Wales Derby on Sunday for doing a Cardiff City Football Club gesture in the Swansea City end.

Before kick-off at the Swansea.com stadium, two rows of stewards lined either side of a block in the east stand separating fans of both teams who attended the match, which ended in a 3-0 win for the Swans over their bitter rivals.

Around half an hour before kick-off, one of those stewards working on the Swansea side turned towards the Cardiff crowd and did the ayatollah - the Bluebirds' famous celebration, which sees them pat their heads. It was met by loud cheers of approval by the Cardiff contingent. Read more about Swansea City here.

A police officer was seen speaking to the steward after agitated Swansea fans made their feelings known.

Some minutes later the steward was seen being guided down the stairs, and, when he reached the bottom, he turned towards the Cardiff contingent and once again did the celebration.

He was then led out and down into the concourse area by a group of stewards.

Swansea City Football Club was approached, but declined to comment.
