Stevie May transfer latest as Aberdeen boss Derek McInnes puts the ball in St Johnstone's court

Derek McInnes insists if St Johnstone really want Stevie May back they’ll be able to thrash out a deal before the window closes.

The McDiarmid Park outfit have already failed with two attempts and another loan bid to take the Aberdeen forward and former Scottish Cup winner back to Perth.

McInnes is willing to cut his losses and write off the £400,000 he paid to Preston two years ago but only if he leaves on a permanent basis.

Saints boss Tommy Wright has made no secret May is his top target and it remains to be seen if chairman Steve Brown can get a deal over the line.

Aberdeen boss McInnes said: “There needs to be some middle ground.

“I’m sure if there is enough desire from all parties they can find a solution to get something done.”

McInnes, despite his side’s lack of goals recently, believes he still has more than enough firepower with top scorer Sam Cosgrove, Curtis Main, Bruce Anderson and James Wilson who can also play up top.

Aberdeen have been active in the transfer market this summer bringing in Ash Taylor, Greg Leigh, Zak Vyner, Craig Bryson, Funso Ojo, Ryan Hedges, Jon Gallagher, Wilson and Main.

McInnes has been well backed by his Pittodrie board and claims he doesn’t expect to may any further additions before the start of next month.

He said: “There won’t be any players coming in. The squad is what it is. Our numbers are good and if we get a fully-fit squad then I have good options in all areas of the pitch.

“In terms of players going out that remains to be seen.”
