Steven Whittaker retires as Hibs favourite joins Dunfermline's new-look coaching staff

Former Hibs star Steven Whittaker has retired from playing.

The 36-year-old hangs up his boots to become part of Peter Grant’s coaching team at Dunfermline.

The former Scotland international joined the Pars last summer after ending his second spell at Easter Road.

Whittaker had begun coaching the Hibees’ youth team before combining playing and coaching duties at East End Park under Stevie Crawford.

The former Hibs striker’s resignation as manager of the Fife outfit saw Grant installed as his successor, and Whittaker has joined Greg Shields on his coaching staff.

Grant said: “I am absolutely delighted that Greg and Steven agreed to work with me to take this club forward.

“It was always my intention to speak to the both of them as they are both good people as well as being the right type of coaches and characters.

“I really think there will be good synergy with our own views on how we would like to play, and I also feel there will be a right good dynamic between the three of us.

“In addition, they are both keen to do well and develop as coaches as well and provide me with good continuity coming into the job.”

Whittaker made 165 appearances in green and white after graduating from the club’s youth system.

He scored three goals and provided nine assists, lifting the CIS Cup in 2007 before making a £2million move to Rangers later that year.
