Steven Thompson slams SPFL reconstruction failure as pundit blasts 'morally wrong' move

Outspoken Sportscene pundit Steven Thompson has attacked the fairness of clubs being relegated without the season playing to a conclusion as "morally wrong".

Hearts face joining Partick Thistle and Stranraer in being relegated when the SPFL call time on the Premiership in the days ahead.

The three teams thought there may be a reprieve in the form of league reconstruction but that proved to be a forlorn hope when six clubs from the top flight moved to kibosh plans.

And the former Scotland man reckons that self-interested clubs have tarnished the sporting integrity of the leagues with their inability to come together to find an amicable solution to the pandemic.

He told the BBC: "I've been consistent on this since the start of COVID-19 and I think it's morally wrong.

"Sporting integrity is about a fair outcome and I don't think this is a fair outcome.

"We have talked there a wee bit about reconstruction. To take that off the table when it was the only real way of doing something that was morally right to me sums up where Scottish football is just now in terms of self preservation.

"There has been no togetherness from any of the clubs, it's been all about 'Can we save ourselves?'

"I say to Jim Goodwin on my chat group 'If you were voting Goody, you'd be voting the other way'.

"You are only going to look after yourself.

"For the integrity of the game, and I have said this from the start, to call the leagues and to relegate Hearts, Partick Thistle and Stranraer is wrong."
