Steven Thompson slams SPFL and claims last season COULD have been played to a conclusion

Outspoken TV pundit Steven Thompson has claimed the season could have been finished and the SPFL were too keen to call time on the top flight.

The former Rangers, Dundee United and St Mirren star is now one of the most prominent commentators in the game with a regular gig on the BBC's Premiership highlights show.

And given the Premier League, La Liga, Serie A and many other leagues are now returning to finish their 2019/20 campaigns, Thompson feels we could have done the same in Scotland.

Speaking to the BBC, he said: "The clubs and the SPFL board were desperate to release funds to the clubs and that was the reason everybody voted for the league to be concluded.

"I felt there was not enough time and consideration given to trying to explore every possibility to finish the season.

"Hindsight is a great thing but looking back now, if the SPFL board were not in such a rush to get it done, I think we could have been back.

"The amount of games left, you could have squeezed the games in.

"We weren't to know that James Anderson was going to come up with a big pot of money and a lot of things have happened.

"But in terms of fairness with Hearts being relegated and of course all Rangers fans think Celtic 's title is tainted, they wouldn't have been any of these questions had we finished the season."
