Steven Thompson rounds on Rangers partygoers and asks 'is a fine enough' as Billy Dodds makes dire Ibrox future prediction

Billy Dodds and Steven Thompson were left baffled by Rangers' partygoing stars as the Ibrox five were warned they could have torpedoed their own careers at the club.

Calvin Bassey, Nathan Patterson and Bongani Zungu were caught at a party in the early hours of Sunday morning following the win over Kilmarnock.

Youth players Dapo Mebude and Brian Kinnear were also present, with all five facing action by Rangers.

Speaking on BBC Radio Scotland ahead of Celtic vs Aberdeen, former Ibrox strikers Thompson and Dodds were asked for their thoughts on the incident.

And it was pointed out this isn't the first time such a breach has taken place at Rangers, with Jordan Jones and George Edmundson caught doing the same thing in November.

Thompson replied: "You couldn't have put it any better, and with what happened previously, with the two Rangers players doing something similar, you'd have thought Steven Gerrard and his backroom staff will have been over the course with the players and telling them.

"Not that they need told, I think that's the point. Obviously they're high profile.

"Having played with Rangers, you can't really escape from the spotlight no matter where you are.

"If you think you're in somebody's house hiding, in the modern day with mobile phones it's very difficult to pull something like that off and it's no surprise that they've been caught.

"I think they should throw the book at them.

"For me it's completely unacceptable what they've done. Is a fine enough? Is an internal fine enough for these players?

"I'm pretty sure the SFA will give them a ban of some sort but for me it's just unthinkable that the players, given the privilege that they have at this minute in time to be able to go out and work and do their job when everbody else isn't really able to do that, go and throw that in the face of their club, of their supporters, of their manager and get caught out at a house part.

"It really defies logic, it's beyond comprehension."

Fellow pundit Billy Dodds agreed, pointing to the examples of Jones and Edmundson.

And the former Rangers striker believes the five may have cost themselves their careers at the club: "It looks as if they've gone, it's on loan but I think that'll be the last time you see them at the club.

"It's madness in every department, there's no other way to put it.

"Whether that's from a health point of view or the sporting context of it, where Rangers are, how close they are to stopping Celtic getting 10 In A Row.

"They've seen what George Edmundson has done, they've seen what Jordan Jones has done and they're still going to a party.

"It doesn't matter how young they are.

"We can maybe look at that, say they're all young lads, but it's absolute lunacy it really is.

"I can't believe they've put themselves in that situation knowing what will come their way.

"Yeah they're going to get a heavy fine, yeah they're going to get banned - was it seven games that Jones and Edmundson got?

"And, for me, that will finish probably all of them.

"If you're going to set the bar you can't say, 'oh because they're young lads'.

"You can't just maybe get rid of two or three and let the other two off with it.

"You've to make a statement. They might not get rid of all of them, but I can see a few at least going on loan.

"They'll get a big fine, they'll be missing a lot of games and I think a lot of them, if not all of them, will be getting shipped out on loan at least.

"You might even see a couple of them leaving the club."
