Steven Thompson issues Rangers pressure warning as he pinpoints the area Steven Gerrard 'needs to look at'

Former Rangers striker Steven Thompson warns his old side will be under the most pressure they've "ever been under" next season.

The decision on Monday to end the Premiership season saw Celtic crowned champions for a ninth season in a row.

That record has previously been achieved by both sides of the Glasgow divide, but no club has ever done 10.

Next season Neil Lennon and his players will be looking to do just that, and Thompson warns the pressure on Rangers will be huge.

He said on BBC Radio Scotland: "The pressure of being an Old Firm player is immense at the best of times.

"But the pressure on Rangers players next season trying to stop ten is going to be the most pressure that a Rangers side has ever been under.

"I don't envy them trying to stop 10-in-a-row to be fair as it is a hell of a task.

"There's a mentality that goes along with talent in being able to win things and Scott Brown is the epitome of that.

"That's where Rangers need to look at in terms of recruiting.

"They need to sign players that know how to get the job done in terms of winning."

Many Rangers fans feel there is an asterisk beside Celtic's title, as their side weren't mathematically out of it, but the BBC pundit insisted Steven Gerrard 's side were never going to close a 13 point gap.

Thompson insisted: "Rangers were not catching them the form they were in.

"One thing that is undeniable is that Celtic were going to win the league.

"Even the hardest of Rangers fans should be able to look in the mirror and suggest that was the case.

"Rangers had the momentum and belief after the Old Firm victory in December but what Celtic did was come back in January and change the shape of the side.

"They introduced Leigh Griffiths alongside Odsonne Edouard and it basically found them another level.

"Edouard's been the player of the season for me.

"If I was going to pick another player alongside Edouard it would be Callum McGregor.

"He is the most talented midfielder in the country."
