Steven Spielberg: Harrison Ford will never be replaced as Indiana Jones

Steven Spielberg has denied rumours that Indiana Jones might be played by someone other than Harrison Ford in the future.

In an interview with Screen International, the Oscar-winning director has said that no other actor would be able to take on the role.

“I don’t think anyone could replace Harrison as Indy,” he said. “It’s certainly not my intention to have another actor step into his shoes in the way there have been many actors that have played Spider-Man or Batman. There is only going to be one actor playing Indiana Jones and that’s Harrison Ford.”

His comments counter the rumour that another actor – such as Chris Pratt, who had been previously linked – would play the adventurous archaeologist.

Despite the negative reviews that followed Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Spielberg is still keen to return to the franchise. “There are more adventures out there than films,” he said. “I’ve got a bullwhip, a fedora, a leather jacket and a man on a horse who knows how to get the job done.”

Harrison Ford also expressed his desire to play the character again in a recent interview. “Yeah, I’d love to do another Indiana Jones,” he said to Entertainment Weekly. “A character that has a history and a potential, kind of a rollicking good movie ride for the audience, Steven Spielberg as a director — what’s not to like?”

While Spielberg’s comments suggest that a new Indiana Jones will not be crowned, producer Frank Marshall recently suggested that other characters might take over from Ford.

“There’s a bunch of people who could probably take the baton,” Marshall told Total Film. “[But we are] not doing the Bond thing where we’re going to call somebody else Indiana Jones … we have to figure this out.”
