Steven Spielberg and Tom Hanks 'anger Oxfordshire locals with WW2 series filming'

Tom Hanks and Steven Spielberg have become embroiled in a row with residents of an Oxfordshire village over the filming of a new series set in WW2, it is claimed.

Masters of the Air, which is being produced by Hanks and Spielberg, is being filmed at a former military base near Abingdon and Shippon.

It is being transformed into a American air force base, with vintage fighter planes, thousands of actors, and gunfire commonplace on the £1million set.

Nearby residents have been urging council officials to halt filming of the series, which is being directed by Bond director Cary Fukunaga, over noise complaints.

A source told The Sun: “For loads of people locally this is the most exciting thing that has happened in a long time, but for some folk very close it’s a real life nightmare.

“There has been a year of lockdown already disrupting normal life and now there’s thousands of crew, actors and machinery descending – not to mention the late night pyrotechnics.

“It goes without saying recreating World War 2 is not the sort of thing anyone wants to see as they look out of their windows in a little rural village just as life was supposed to be returning to normal.

“Some of us were looking forward to garden parties – now it feels like we’re going to need to put our tin hats on.”

The big budget series, which tells the story of the Eighth Air Force squadron during the 1939-45 conflict, is due to be filmed in the area for the next nine months.

Masters of the Air is expected to air on Apple TV in early 2022.

The full cast has not yet been anounced.

According to Insiders the series will feature nine epsisodes and has a production budget of £200million.
