Richarlison and Steven Pienaar lead tributes as special Everton icon Leighton Baines saluted

Both current and former Everton players have been leading tributes to Leighton Baines after the left-back announced his retirement from football.

On the final day of the 2019/20 Premier League season, Baines decided to hang up his boots and turn down a one-year contract extension offer after 13 years with the Blues.

Everton attacker Richarlison posted: "When Evertonians think of the giants who wore this shirt, they'll remember you. Thanks for everything!"

Former winger Steven Pienaar wrote on Twitter: "It was a pleasure to play with you lad go on and enjoy life, family and your music."

Blues icon Tim Cahill said: "Congratulations Leighton Baines. Amazing career and pleasure to have shared the pitch with you my man. Assist king. Blue family. Only pics I could find was us celebrating goals."

Ex-striker Victor Anichebe posted on Instagram: "What a legend Leighton Baines is! Such a nice guy on and off the park! What an incredible servant for Everton!"

Midfielder Yannick Bolasie said: "Sad I won’t get to play with you again bro... but was a pleasure competing against you then even more special playing with you. Real G! Real love. Leighton Baines."

Winger Theo Walcott wrote: "It’s difficult to put into words not just what a great footballer Leighton is but also what a great friend he is. We had so many great battles against each other and special times as a teammate for club & country. I want to wish you & your family all the success in the future."

Former centre-back Joleon Lescott posted on Instagram with a message simply reading "what a guy" while goalkeeper Joao Virginia wrote "true legend".

Bradford forward and former Everton man James Vaughan went with two words: "The best."

And the England national football team account wrote: "Wishing Leighton Baines all the very best in retirement.The defender won 30 caps for the Three Lions, scoring one goal. Congratulations on a fantastic career."
