Steven Naismith trains with Hearts as permanent move edges closer

Steven Naismith trained with Hearts today with confirmation of him signing a permanent contract expected to come next month.

The former Norwich striker trained with the Jambos prior to their week-long training camp in Dublin and Belfast.

He didn't travel with the squad for that, but was back at Riccarton today being out through his paces.

The timing of Naismith's signing is crucial if he wants to avoid jeopardising his "13th month" payment from the English PFA.

Players who are free agents receive an extra month's salary from the English players' union to cover their time unemployed while looking for a club.

However, if a transfer is confirmed by either party before the time period elapses, then they could lose out.

It's understood Naismith was on a weekly wage of around £40,000 at Carrow Road, so would be forgoing around £160,000 for the sake of an extra few weeks as a Hearts player.

The Scotland international has spent the last 18 months on loan in Gorgie across two separate spells.

Craig Levein has already added Northern Irish striker Conor Washington to his squad while also bringing jamie Walker back to Tynecastle.

Defender Craig Halkett arrived from Livingston, while left back Aidy White will effectively be a new signing having not played since penning a two-year deal towards the end of last season.
