Steven Naismith joins Scotland coaching staff as Hearts assistant Austin McPhee withdraws due to Covid

Steven Naismith has joined the Scotland coaching team as a last-minute replacement for Austin McPhee.

Steve Clarke's team are getting ready for a World Cup qualifying triple header that could make or break their hopes for Qatar next year.

Scotland will face Denmark, Moldova and Austria in quick succession and realistically need six points minimum to keep the dream alive.

Preparations have been far from ideal however with a number of injuries and Covid problems stripping the squad back to bare bones.

Clarke will be without John McGinn, Stuart Armstrong, Nathan Patterson, James Forrest and Greg Taylor for the Denmark clash.

And he will also have to crack on without Hearts assistant McPhee, who joined the international coaching staff earlier this month.

McPhee withdrawing due to Covid means there's an opportunity for Naismith, who is currently football development manager at Tynecastle.

Naismith was given his last international cap by Clarke back in 2019 and has been drafted in to help out the coaching team at short notice.

He'll fly out to Denmark with the team for Wednesday's clash before returning to Hearts ahead of the big Edinburgh Derby in two weeks' time.
