Steven McLean to referee first Rangers clash since Steven Gerrard apology as weekend appointments are confirmed

Referee Steven McLean will take charge of his first Rangers match since he phoned Steven Gerrard to apologise for a decision made against the Ibrox side in March.

The whistler is in the middle as Gerrard takes his side to face Hamilton for the lunchtime kick off on Sunday.

McLean was blasted as “foolish” by former Hibs manager Paul Heckingbottom for making the call to Gerrard in the wake of a 1-1 draw between the sides last season.

The referee contacted Gerrard to make a personal apology for missing a foul on Rangers skipper James Tavernier in the build-up to Hibs’ equaliser in the match.

But Heckingbottom blasted: "He shouldn’t be doing it. It was foolish. I think it was an error of judgment.

"I cannot believe he has done it, for lots of reasons.

“Where does it stop? Because I guarantee you there will be another 20 or 30 wrong and probably another 100 decisions in every game which are contentious."

Sunday’s clash will be McLean’s seventh top flight match of the season. He will be assisted by Dougie Potter and Drew Kirkland with Gavin Ross as fourth official.

Elsewhere Andrew Dallas will take charge of his first Celtic match this season when the league leaders host Livingston on Saturday.

Bottom dogs St Mirren welcome Ross County with Euan Anderson set to take charge assisted by David McGeachie and Ralph Gordon with Willie Collum as fourth official.

And Kevin Clancy is the man in the middle for St Johnstone’s home clash with Aberdeen on Sunday afternoon. Daniel McFarlane and Paul O’Neill assist with Steven Kirkland fourth official.
