Steven Matz out, Zach Wheeler, Robert Gsellman in Mets' rotation

PORT ST. LUCIE, Fla. _ Mets lefty Steven Matz likely will be sidelined for more than a month thanks to his latest bout with elbow pain.

In his place, right-hander Zack Wheeler will step into the rotation after a long journey back from Tommy John surgery. His first big league start since 2014 is scheduled for April 7 at Citi Field against the Marlins.

The rotation decision highlighted a string of moves that brought the Mets' roster to begin the season into clearer focus. General manager Sandy Alderson also announced:

_Matz's follow-up MRI exam revealed no structural damage to his elbow. But doctors have recommended that he doesn't throw for three weeks.

Once he resumes throwing, Matz still must complete a throwing program, adding even more time to his absence. The lefty also underwent a PRP injection, which is designed to promote healing.

_The Mets will carry seven relievers, meaning the club still has to decide between Seth Lugo and Rafael Montero for the final spot. One will pitch in long relief for the Mets while the other will begin the year in Triple-A Las Vegas.

_Utilityman Ty Kelly will be added to the 40-man roster, taking the place of Jeurys Familia, who will be suspended 15 games for a domestic violence incident. Kelly gives the Mets a standard five-man bench.

_Wheeler and Matt Harvey will remain in Florida. They are scheduled to pitch in an intrasquad this weekend before going to New York.

_Wheeler starts the fourth game of the season, Noah Syndergaard the fifth (his second time through the rotation, on regular rest), and Robert Gsellman the sixth. Gsellman will be in the bullpen for the first few games of the season.

_David Wright, Brandon Nimmo and Matz will begin the season on the 10-day disabled list. Juan Lagares also is likely to land on the DL, with Michael Conforto taking his spot on the roster.
