Steven Gerrard would walk into Rangers team and help them beat Celtic insists Danny Murphy

Danny Murphy has claimed Steven Gerrard would walk into the Rangers team and help them beat Celtic if he decided to pull his boots back on.

The Ibrox boss rolled back the years to score the winner in a Liverpool legends game on Saturday and his old team-mate reckons he could still do a job in Scotland.

Gerrard hasn't kicked a ball in anger since leaving LA Galaxy, and subsequently retiring, in 2016. Murphy played alongside the 38-year-old at Anfield and is certain he would still get straight into the Rangers team if he felt like it.

Graeme Souness played for Rangers as a player/manager in the early 90s and was a huge success.

And Murphy reckons it would be the same for Gerrard.

He told talkSPORT: "I don't know his fitness right now but what I say the other day and what I have seen over the years, he would - with a little bit of tweaking - walk into that Rangers team."

Rangers legend Ally McCoist admits he can’t bring himself to look at Celtic Park

Murphy was on with Jim White and the presenter questioned how Gerrard would do in Scotland if he did decide to register himself as a player.

And despite not playing a professional game in nearly three years, Murphy reckons he would be a standout in the Premiership and even dominate a game against Celtic.

Rangers face Celtic on Sunday in a huge Premiership clash, and Murphy revealed he would expect Gerrard to drag the Ibrox side over the line if he lined up in the middle of the park.

He added: "(He would) Boss it. He would be humble and say no but he's still in his 30s. If he put his boots on against Celtic, it wouldn't surprise me if they won and he got the winner because that's what he does.

"But he's not going to do it so let's not get hopeful for the Rangers fans."
