Steven Gerrard won't leave Rangers for basement battle but Sam Allardyce highlights 'exciting' attraction

Former Newcastle boss Sam Allardyce reckons Steven Gerrard will only leave Ibrox for a top Premier League job.

The Rangers manager was heavily linked as a contender for the Newcastle job vacated by Steve Bruce last month, but Eddie Howe looks set to take the mantle.

A £305million takeover of the Premier League club was completed by the Saudi Public Investment Fund in October to usher in football's richest owners.

Gerrard has earned hero status at Rangers after winning his first Premiership title last season and ending Celtic's 10-in-a-row bid.

He has also achieved success in Europe, including progression to the Europa League's last 16.

Newcastle are in the Premier League's relegation zone and face a fight to stay in the division. Allardyce says only one of England's top managerial roles could persuade Gerrard to relocate.

“I don’t think Steven, at this stage, will leave Rangers where they are, top of the league and winning every week, to fight at the bottom of the Premier League," the former Toon boss told TalkSport.

“The Premier League is a massive and exciting league that everybody wants to manage in across the world, I would presume he would want to get here someday.

“At the moment, the Newcastle job is a massive one, but why leave Rangers who are winning every week to challenge yourself with the trials and tribulations of Newcastle?

“Even though they have got plenty of money to spend, they can’t spend it that quick because of financial fair play."
