Steven Gerrard will become Rangers 'god' upon lifting Premiership title quips Charlie Adam

Charlie Adam reckons Steven Gerrard is heading for deification if he wins the Scottish Premiership title.

And while he already has an exalted status with Rangers fans due to his storied history as a player, the Dundee midfielder feels that raising a 55th championship will turn the Liverpool legend into an Ibrox icon who can "walk on water".

Adam was captained by Gerrard during his season at Anfield in 2011/12 and keeps a keen eye on how his former teammate is performing at his old club.

And according to the 35-year old, not even the Scouser himself will realise what it means to the Rangers faithful until he's finally crossed the line.

He told Football Pass: "I think it will mean everything but I don't think he will realise what it will mean to the supporters until they get over the line.

"He is going to be a hero in Glasgow. He already is because of who he is but because of what he has done.

"He's built the football club again from where it was and it was in a bad way three or four years ago before he had taken over.

"He's rebuilt that to a club that is pushing on a European front.

"It's great to see Rangers challenging on all fronts, especially in Europe as well.

"Winning domestic trophies is key but if he can get that domestic title to stop Ten In A Row then I think the man can walk on water. He will be that much of a god on the blue side."

Adam was part of the squad that reached the UEFA Cup Final in 2008 and is delighted to see the Ibrox men back operating as a force on the European stage.

Gerrard's record has been impeccable on the continent since arriving in 2018, improving year on year.

He will have to get past Belgian side Antwerp to match the last 16 performance of last term, but Adam sees no reason why they can't continue to punch above their weight.

He said: "I think if the ties are kind to them they can go far.

"Steven has got them well drilled, well set up, Steven's record in Europe as a manager has been phenomenal since he's been at the football club. I just think if you can get a good draw.

"There's a couple of English teams still in - so you never know.

"The later you go in the better the opposition you are going to get.

"If they can get through this and try and wrap the league title up before the split in the next few weeks it's been a great season so far.

"The Scottish Cup we don't know what's going to happen because of the lower leagues being off at the moment.

"Rangers need to focus on two competitions which is the Premiership and getting into the next round of Europe."
