Steven Gerrard warns he 'won't be at Rangers forever' but insists he's in no rush for Liverpool job

Steven Gerrard insists he is no rush to leave Rangers if the club’s relentless march to the Scottish Premiership summit this season ends with the club lifting the title - but warned fans he “won’t be at Ibrox forever.”

The Liverpool legend is hotly tipped to be the man who replaces Jurgen Klopp in the Anfield dugout when the German boss’s contract expires at the end of the 2023/24 season, the same year in which Gerrard’s own deal in Glasgow is up.

Former teammate Jamie Carragher said the Champions League winner “was not ready” to make the step up to that role quite yet in the aftermath of Frank Lampard’s departure from Chelsea, but admitted he could see him stepping up to the job in the future.

The Gers have charged into a near-unassailable lead at the top of Scotland’s top flight, holding a 23-point lead over Celtic without losing in their 26 league games thus far.

The 40-year-old’s wife, Alex, and children still live on Merseyside, and while Gerrard admits the lure of managing in the Premier League remains attractive, he is not setting a firm date on when he will bring his time in Govan to an end.

“'It comes with its challenges, in terms of the family situation and I am not going to be at Rangers forever,” he told the Daily Mail.

“I understand that. I have got dreams of one day going down south and managing teams down there but I am in no rush, I haven't got a date or a time so I haven't really thought too much about what Jamie said in that interview.

“I did see it so maybe his opinion is right but it's not something I have taken too much notice of because I am not looking too far ahead. I'm very focused on the now and trying to stay in the now with Rangers. I get asked that question a lot about Liverpool and I don't really want to get involved with it because it's not something for me to be concerned with.”

Gerrard added: “They have got a fantastic, world class manager, they are on a real wave of success and as a fan that is an unbelievable place to be in and I am really proud of the club and the efforts of the last couple of years and I'm loving seeing Liverpool where they are right now.

“I need to focus on the job I'm in now which is a fantastic opportunity for me and a huge job.”
