Steven Gerrard urged to leave Rangers as desperate Alan Brazil jokes 'do the right thing' amid Newcastle rumours

Alan Brazil has jokingly challenged Steven Gerrard to "do the right thing" and leave Rangers for Newcastle.

The Tyneside club were taken over by a Saudi Arabian investment fund last week, and manager Steve Bruce looks to have no long-term future with the Magpies.

Ibrox boss Gerrard has been linked with the job after Liverpool legend having delivered Rangers to the Premiership title last season without losing a league game.

That stunning triumph and their position atop the standings may have something to do with Celtic fan Brazil's attitude to the rumours about Newcastle.

The former striker has urged Gerrard to grasp the opportunity with both hands, joking he wouldn't even have to uproot.

Brazil said on talkSPORT: "Steven, step up! Do the right thing!

"You can still live in Glasgow or Edinburgh or wherever you live now and travel every day! No problem."

Guest Dave Stevens saw through the ruse though, asking: "You're just desperate for him to go, aren't you?"

Frank Lampard is the current favourite to step into Bruce's shoes, with former Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers also linked.

The Tottenham match will be the Newcastle boss' 1000th in management and Brazil urged the fans to give him a proper send off if this is to be his farewell.

He said: "If this is his last game I hope he gets a big send-off.

"A thousand games, that takes some doing - and he deserves it for God's sake.

"Come on, he's a Geordie, he's a Newcastle fan. Get behind him if this is his last game."
