Steven Gerrard 'upset' by Ryan Jack's Rangers injury hesitation as he provides positive James Tavernier update

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard admits he's "upset" Ryan Jack didn't report his calf injury sooner after the midfielder went off in the league leaders' 4-1 win over Dundee United.

Jack is a key figure in the Ibrox engine room and previously spent two months out before making his return from a knee problem last month.

But he had to be replaced by Glen Kamara against Micky Mellon's side on Sunday afternoon.

Although he was substituted on 27 minutes, Gerrard revealed after the match that his key midfielder in fact first felt the problem after just 10.

That's slightly irked the manager but there's better news on the injury front with the revelation captain James Tavernier and forward Kemar Roofe should only be missing for two to three weeks after both went down against Royal Antwerp in Thursday night's Europa League clash.

Gerrard told Rangers TV: "Hopefully we've got to the injury before it becomes an injury.

"He felt some tightness in his calf early in the game, he hasn't felt anything tear which is good but we're going to have to scan it and see what it is.

"He first felt it after 10 minutes so I'm a little upset that he hasn't reported it after 10 minutes, he's played on for a little bit longer.

"So we'll have to scan it and see what the damage is but fingers crossed he's not out because he's so important to us.

"What I will say is Glen Kamara came onto the pitch and looked top class again. I wanted to save Glen for Thursday night to have him fresh and Jacko made the start because he was offloaded during the week but Glen was outstanding."

Gerrard added: "James and Kemar will miss the next couple of weeks at least. It's difficult to put an exact date of return, but they'll certainly miss the next couple of weeks.

"All being well, you should see them in two to three weeks."

United had the better start as Allan McGregor was called into action on several occasions in the first 25 minutes but the champions elect pulled away shortly after.

Ianis Hagi, Ryan Kent, Joe Aribo and Alfredo Morelos were all on target, although Borna Barisic couldn't follow up his spot-kick heroics in Belgium when his penalty was saved by Benjamin Siegrist before a late Marc McNulty consolation for the visitors.

Gerrard's side are now just three wins from the title as he said: "Obviously I'm very happy with the result and the outcome of the game. There's a big rivalry in this fixture that everyone's well aware about.

"We knew they'd start bright, especially off the back of us playing in Europe, and they had a lot of energy and a lot of runners from midfield that caused us a few issues.

"Once we got to terms with that we settled into the game and got ourselves into a very comfortable position."

Aribo's powerful left-footed strike was the pick of the goals as the Nigeria international continued his fine form having netting the opener in midweek.

And Gerrard saluted him as he paid him the ultimate Liverpudlian compliment: "boss".

The gaffer added: "He (Aribo) is really back now, he's took his time getting up to speed but his performance in midweek and his performance today, he deserves his man of the match.

"He was out for a long time, it was his first injury he's suffered in his career and he had an illness that he suffered after the injury but it's taken him some time to get back in the groove but he was fantastic. Not just the goal, but his running power, his quick feet - he outplays people.

"Once you get in the box you're in trouble because he's got all the skills he needs.

"I can't speak highly enough of him, he's a boss kid and he wants to improve.

"We're delighted to have him, he decided to come to Rangers to develop and grow, and he's certainly moving in the right direction."
