Steven Gerrard underestimated Rangers and Celtic 10 In A Row obsession until service station encounter

Steven Gerrard didn't quite know what all the fuss was at first when it came to Rangers, Celtic and something called '10 In A Row'.

But he quickly found out before he'd even arrived in the Ibrox blue room - as a service station stop made it clear what his main mission was to be.

Gerrard insists Douglas Park, Stewart Robertson and other Rangers figures saw the bigger picture but for his three full seasons there was no doubt what the main focus was.

Gerrard's side of course conceded titles eight and nine but rose to the occasion in the last roll of the dice to deliver an unbeaten Premiership title before he left for Aston Villa last month.

Speaking to Sky Sports, he said: "From a personal point of view I slightly underestimated the importance of 10 In A Row.

"My chats with the managing director, the chairman and the sporting director, they weren't as obsessed with 10 In A Row. Their remit was about getting Rangers back and competing alongside Celtic.

"But from the very first moment I turned up in Glasgow, even before I'd done my first press conference, three or four people in service stations had mentioned 10 In A Row.

"Very quickly I picked up that this was the main important thing.

"It was obviously very well documented that in year three - if we didn't do it in year one or two which was probably unrealistic - the pressure was going to be on in year three.

"I saw Liverpool do it prior to that, and I thought the only thing missing was the crowd.

"It was very similar at Rangers in terms of how we played. You get the same buzz off the back of a win, but it felt different without the fans.

"But in terms of personal satisfaction, it was the first time I'd won anything since the League Cup under Kenny Dalglish.

"Obviously what happened at the back end of my Liverpool career, coming so close to winning the league but it not happening.

"So there was major satisfaction from achieving that."
