Steven Gerrard turns Rangers protector over Borna Barisic as he enlists Liverpool pal for Croatia mission

It's a worrisome time for some managers when their charges scramble across the world during the international break.

In the worst-case scenario, an irreplaceable player returns from an away trip on a dodgy surface with an injury that keeps him out of action for months.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard clearly doesn't want that to happen.

And that's why he's enlisted former Liverpool team-mate Dejan Lovren to look after Ibrox left-back Borna Barisic while he's away with Croatia.

Lovren shared an Instagram post of himself on the training pitch while away with the 2018 World Cup finalists.

And Gerrard, still in touch with his old Anfield pals, commented: "Look after Borna my man".

With three assists and a goal to his name in just six Premiership games, Barisic's crossing ability and potency from set-pieces make him a valuable asset to the current Rangers team.

So it's no wonder Gerrard might feel the need to be a little protective of his left-back.

Even more so after recent transfer speculation linked him with an £8million Leeds United offer - however Record Sport revealed on Wednesday night that no bids of any kind had arrived.
